Why We Don't Celebrate
Halloween
Halloween is not a holiday we choose to celebrate as a Christian school. We are not legalistic. We are not trying to ruin other people’s fun or deprive our children. We once did all of the Halloween things. Yet, there came a point where we could no longer join in with the world in this holiday. The wholesale celebration of all things evil, ghoulish, and ungodly became just too much to honestly join ourselves with. We believe that we cannot love what is evil while we seek to follow God.
It is inconsistent with our call as Christians to rejoice in what is good, noble, holy, and righteous. We certainly don’t judge others who disagree. But, here are a couple of reasons why we believe you should consider ditching Halloween from your (and your children’s) lives:
1. God forbids the merging of pagan customs into our lives.
“You shall not worship the LORD your God in that way; for every abomination to the LORD which He hates they have done to their gods” (Deuteronomy 12:31).
God demands purity of worship from His followers—not combining paganism with Christianity.
2. God wants us to avoid darkness.
Halloween is all about darkness. It glorifies and emphasizes dark characters of mythology—witches, wizards, vampires, ghosts and zombies. These are all associated with either death, Satanism or the occult.
The Bible is clear that we should “have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness” (Ephesians 5:11). No fellowship means no participation!
Yes, there are other holidays that have pagan origins, but Halloween has nothing redeeming about it; Halloween started evil and it is still evil today. Romans 12:2 says, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind so that you may know God’s good and perfect will.”
The Bible is very clear that witchcraft is real and powerful and also evil (Read Revelation 21:8; 1 Samuel 15:23; Deuteronomy 18:10-13; Isaiah 8:19; and 1 Chronicles 10:13-14).
As Christians, we know that there are powers of darkness in the spirit world. So what must we do when the world trivializes what the Bible describes as evil? It should trouble us deeply. And even more so when we see the god of this world system (the devil) seeking to influence our highly-impressionable children, and to write his values into their minds.
For these reasons we do not celebrate Halloween. However, we do host a fall festival themed "Fall for Jesus" which includes a week of fun fall activities, games, crafts, Bible stories, and pumpkin fun in the pumpkin patch. You will receive specific dates and details from each campus related to the week of festivities.
Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”-Matthew 19:14
